From Mainhattan to Manhattan to Manhattan

Welcome to my blog.
A few classmates suggested writing a blog while I’m doing a research internship at Kansas State University (K-State). So here it is.

My home base "Mainhattan"
The University is located in Manhattan in Kansas. But before I start my internship, I’m going to visit the “real” Manhattan in New York for a week. Thus my itinerary goes from Mainhattan to Manhattan to Manhattan.
At the end of my internship I planned to spend 5 days at Miami Beach before my flight goes back to Frankfurt.

The internship is intended to become topic of my Bachelor Thesis. The current project title is “Imaging of ultrafast light-induced molecular dynamics” and involves measurements with the well known COLTRIMS spectrometer which was mainly invented at Goethe University and became a specialty of my Professor – Prof. Dörner. First experiments in 1978/9 about measuring the recoiled target took place at K-State. Unfortunately these experiments failed. Thus physicists in Frankfurt thought of a new approach of kinematic measurements which led to the development of COLTRIMS (COLd Taget Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy).
K-State has always played a big role in atomic, molecular and optical physics. I’m glad to have the chance to be part of a substantial research group at JR Macdonald laboratory.
To realise this research internship, I’m receiving a scholarship of the DAAD Rise program which is issued by the German Academic Exchange Service.

At this point I want to thank Professor Dörner and my K-State supervisor Professor Rudenko for their huge efforts. They made it all possible and helped me to apply for the scholarship and to get my J1 visa.

More details are coming soon.
